“So that’s the best I can do, guys. Fifty a week each for spending money and I can’t guarantee exactly when, but I’m confident it won’t pass six weeks from now and I’ll pay your wages as a lump sum in full.”

I had the three men seated at the lunchroom table. I was standing, holding court. They worked as a team. The eldest, Noah, was the foreman and spokesperson.

“We’ll need to think about it boss. I’ll need to make a couple of calls to see if I can cover the month or more with no pay. I’ve got bills if these other lads don’t.”

“Yeah me too, I’ll have to have a look at my bank account and work some shit out,” Jarrod said.

“Would we have to buy our own food out of the fifty bucks?” young Elijah asked frowning.

“Nah man, Mrs boss will look after us,” Noah said with a crooked grin and a twinkle in his eye. “Kylie serves our breakfast right here each morning and brings lunch and dinner to us on the job, doesn’t she boss?”

“Yep she sure does. She’s got a store of chips and soft drinks and ice creams and the like. You won’t have much call to go to town,” I explained to the new guy.

This was good. It was sounding positive. I thought I had them until Noah spoke again – for everyone, as was his way.

“Still it’s a lot to ask even if we can wrangle our finances to get through, Mason. I still need to consider whether I’d even want to when there’s plenty of other work around.”

He continued, “I think you need to give us a chance to talk about it amongst ourselves and we’ll let you know in the morning what we decide.”

I nodded and drew a big breath. “Right. Fair enough,” I had to agree. “I’ll leave you men to it then. Kylie has a meal planned for tonight and she has your beds made up. See you tomorrow,” I said and left them.

I had been crawling all over my machinery all day getting everything serviced and ready for a month of solid work, hopefully breakdown free.

If I lost these workmen I would have to forfeit the grain handling side of the contract harvesting for my neighbour. I could operate my header 18 hours a day with Kylie’s help if necessary.

Then when it came to my own harvest I could get Kylie to do the chaser bin and I could switch back and forth from the header and semi-trailer.

It would take a lot longer and I’d be hoping for the weather to remain suitable. There was a narrow window right now before the summer storm season was upon us.

We would get by without the crew but it would be risky and we’d lose a lot by not fulfilling the harvest contract with the neighbour.

Kylie was in the kitchen cooking when I entered the house. I cuddled her from behind and kissed her proffered cheek.

“How was your shift baby?”

“Oh it was good.
